Something has quietly changed in the way people find businesses. Ask Google a question now and there is a good chance it answers at the top of the page, before a single website gets a look in. Ask ChatGPT or another assistant and the answer arrives with no list of links at all. The click that used to come to your website increasingly never leaves the results page.
Small businesses are feeling it. In one survey of over 300 small businesses, nearly half of those with more than ten staff said their website traffic has fallen. If your numbers have dipped this year and you have changed nothing, this is probably why.
The part nobody mentions: the clicks that survive are better
When the AI answers the easy questions, the people who still click through are the ones who want more than an easy answer. They are comparing, checking you out, getting ready to book or buy. Fewer visitors, warmer visitors. The job of your website shifts from catching every search to converting the serious ones.
Being the answer is the new ranking
When an AI summarises "best web designer in Preston" or "bottomless brunch near me", it builds that answer from somewhere: websites that answer questions plainly, Google Business Profiles, reviews, structured data. If your business is the clearest, best evidenced option, you get named. If your website is vague about what you do and where you do it, you are invisible in a way that no amount of advertising fixes.
What to actually do
- Answer real questions in plain English. Price, timings, location, what happens next. The questions customers ask you on the phone belong on your website, word for word.
- Say what you do and where, literally. "Creative solutions for ambitious brands" means nothing to an AI or a human. "Web design in Preston" does.
- Look after your Google Business Profile. AI answers lean heavily on it. Fresh photos, correct hours and steady reviews matter more than ever.
- Get the invisible plumbing right. Structured data, proper page titles and descriptions, a sitemap, fast pages. Boring, decisive, and most small business websites still do not have it.
- Do not block the AI crawlers. Some sites shut them out on principle. That principle costs you every recommendation those assistants would have made.
We practise what we preach
Everything in that list is live on this website: plain answers on every page, structured data, a tended Google profile and pages that say Preston because we are in Preston. It is the same groundwork we lay for clients, and it is why we build search foundations into every site rather than selling them as an extra.
If your traffic has slipped and you want straight answers about why, see how we build websites or get in touch. We read every brief the day it lands.
